An academically excellent Methodist secondary school has received the highest accolade for a Singapore-based business organisation.
Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) was conferred the prestigious Singapore Quality Award under the Business Excellence Awards this year, making it the only educational institution to have received the award. The SQA distinguishes the school as a world-class organisation.
In a media briefing held yesterday afternoon at Shangri-La Hotel before the trophy presentation, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, Deputy Chairman of the SQA Governing Council, said: “There is strong focus on value creation for students and their holistic development in school management and activities.”
Launched in 1994, the SQA is part of an initiative by SPRING Singapore to provide organisations with a framework to develop and strengthen their management systems and processes to achieve high performance and be more competitive.
The only Ministry of Education school to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme – a six-year pre-university course of study – Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) is one of the top three IB World Schools out of more than 1,800 worldwide.
For the November 2008 examinations, the International Baccalaureate Organisation has indicated that ACS (Independent) is one of the top performing schools in the world, according to a circular by the Principal/CEO Dr Ong Teck Chin.
The school achieved a 100 percent pass rate compared with the world average of 78.75 percent and a mean score of 40.10 out of a possible 45 compared with the world average of 32.75.
Two hundred and fifty two students or about 62 percent achieved 40 points and above, including nine students with perfect scores.
Internationally, the IBDP score of 38 points and above would qualify students for a place in Oxbridge as well as in the Ivy League universities in the U.S.
Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) is one of the twelve government-aided Methodist schools in Singapore.
