The first President's Command Performance saw renowned Singapore violinist Kam Ning playing Amazing Grace, local media reported.

Marking the tenth anniversary of the President's Challenge, the event showcased the nation's finest in photography, literature, fashion and music.

The event reverberated with Kam’s own personal passion: to use her talents to glorify God through helping the needy. The President’s Challenge is an annual series of community-based activities to raise funds for charities.

“What are our talents for? Yes, to bring God His due glory for what He created. But what truly gives God His glory, is when we reflect His character in what we do… to others,” said Kam, an accomplished virtuoso who has performed with many world-class orchestras, on her official website.

“There are people all over the world who have yet to hear of His Name, who are right this minute living under desperate circumstances. People who would give their right arm for what we completely take for granted. People who don’t have the liberty or luxury to simple everyday things such as eating when they want or however much they want; or going to sleep without the fear of death around the corner in a warzone. Or going to school. Or perhaps they cannot take a walk because they simply do not have legs to walk with or maybe a disease has overtaken their lives so they are bedridden.

“These things that can so easily be preventable in our society just seem to these less fortunate like insurmountable obstacles.”

The inaugural cultural festival also featured local talent such as pianist Abigail Sin, poet Edwin Thumboo, singer Stefanie Sun and pianist Margaret Leng Tan. President S R Nathan was the guest of honour at the event, which was organised by Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and MediaCorp.

The President’s Command Performance will be aired on Channel 5 on April 19 at 7.30 p.m.
