New Learning Centre Aims to Get Children 'Brain-Fit'

Thursday, May. 7, 2009 Posted: 7:57:55PM HKT

Focus on the Family has started a learning centre to help children develop their learning capabilities.

Located on the fourth floor of Jurong Point, a burgeoning hub of activity, the new facility will be an integrated family life centre with a special focus on building and enriching young lives through learning programmes, family life education and family support services, according to a brochure.

Children will be able to develop their brain fitness through three patented programmes offered at the centre and strengthen the pillars that are critical to concentration, visual-motor coordination and language.

One of the researched-based programmes, Fast ForWord uses patented technology to improve listening, language and literacy skills, geared toward helping children enjoy and get more out of their learning journey. The programme will help children develop their auditory processing and memory, receptive and expressive language skills, learning speed, focus and confidence and communication and social skills.

Revamp, an exercise-based programme, will improve children’s visual-motor coordination through a series of physical and table-top activities, helping them with handwriting and note taking, focus and organisation of tasks, body and spatial awareness, gross and fine motor skills and visual perception.

The third programme, Play Attention, employs state-of-the-art neuro-feedback technology that NASA astronauts and the U.S. Air Force pilots use for training. The programme will train children to overcome distractions and think with more focus, helping them bolster their attention and concentration, ability to stay on task, working memory, mental stamina and impulse control.

Furthermore, the learning centre offers personalised learning skills profiling so as to tailor the programmes to the unique needs of each child.

The family ministry will be launching the new learning centre at an open house on May 23.
