A church-based ministry that has been reaching out to Chinese nationals here has seen literally thousands of conversions.
Located in the heart of Chinatown, the Fairfield Methodist Church ministry, which has been serving the needs of Chinese nationals by conducting fellowship and prayer meetings, witnessed 3,870 conversions thus far, according to the church website.
In a book written in 2008 on the missions activity of the large congregation, ministry leader Chan Siew Leong explained that the nationals faced the problems of homesickness, low self-esteem and a boring work routine.
“They long for a sense of dignity, friendship, and care. A few ministry staff and leaders observed that they were in need of warm fellowship.”
By providing a ‘foster’ home for these nationals where church members express the love of God in various ways, the ministry has made them more receptive to the Gospel and succeeded in reaching many of them, said Chan.
Chinese nationals usually have a work pass for a period of two years to be in Singapore. Through an invitation from their respective friends, they come to attend the Sunday evening fellowship meetings.
