Event Raises Over $210K for Nursing Home

Monday, Oct. 5, 2009 Posted: 9:19:29PM HKT

A charity event organised by The Salvation Army has raised $211,012.80 for a nursing home for elderly and younger people with physical or mental disability.

This is more than twice the target amount.

Nearly 80 participants took part in the biking event, which required each individual to raise a minimum of $900.

Held from September 5 to 6, the activity saw participants riding a distance of 320km to Mersing and back.

According to the website of The Salvation Army, participants raised a total of nearly $140,000, with two people raising more than $12,000 each. Another three participants raised around $5,000 to $7,000.

Eight companies took up sponsorships, raising a total of $60,000. Donations from other places amounted to more than $12,000.

Sponsoring companies included Accenture Pte Ltd, ACI Worldwide, ECS Computer Pte Ltd, Equinix Singapore Pte Ltd, Hewlett Packard Singapore, Hitachi Data Systems Pte Ltd, Microsoft Regional Sales Corporation and Software AG.

Four of the participants represented sponsoring companies.

The beneficiary was Peacehaven Nursing Home, run by The Salvation Army.

Organisers initially aimed to raise $100,000 through the event.

The Charity BnB (Bike ‘n’ Blade) was started in 2005 with the concept of having people particilate in a sport they love as a vehicle to raise money for society’s underprivileged.
